Winter Driving Tips

Winter Driving is Coming Soon

It always seems like the first snow of the season brings the most number of cars-in-ditch.  We live in a part of the country where seasons change drastically.  We’re masters of the roadway until the flurries start.  Its like we forget that snow is as slippery as it is beautiful.  After that first snow we are once again masters of the roadway but we need to feel that slip of the breaks to relearn each Winter.  Here are some tips to get you back in the swing of things.

Make certain your tires are properly inflated.  You should check your tires regularly but if were being honest we might not even know where we put the tire-guage.  Just as its smart to wear our shoes on the right foot lets make sure our tires are ready to touch the snow.

Avoid driving while tired.  Your reaction time will be critical in slippery or wet conditions.  Driving while tired or fatigued will decrease your reaction time.

Take extra time stopping at an intersection.  Better safe than sorry.  Better to be in control when approaching an intersection than having to apply the breaks heavily…you may find stopping suddenly to be impossible.

Practical Non-Driving Tips

Make sure your mobile phone has a full charge especially while on a long trip.  If your car stops running you may need that extra battery time to call for help.  It is also a good idea to keep an extra blanket in your vehicle.  if you car stops running your heater stops running.  We have all jumped into a warm car for a short trip and maybe didn’t dress for a day at the ski hill.  Staying warm is critical.

Finally, stay home. If you really don’t have to go out, don’t. Even if you can drive well in the snow, not everyone else can. Don’t tempt fate: If you don’t have somewhere you have to be, watch the snow from indoors.  Its fun!
